Villa Maria lodge’s Fishing report :

Week: 12th to 19th of March:

Straight from the horse’s mouth:

This week we have welcomed a group composed of 4 anglers, two austrians, Mr Andreas Bachler and Mr Gerard Hoerl, one american and old friend Mr Jim Monguillo and Mr Hugh Chesternon from UK.

We had another good week at Villa Maria altough the fishing was tough. Anglers and guides worked very hard to find the fish  due to the difficult conditions. In terms of numbers we hooked 73 fish and landed 46 fish! The size of the fish keep on improving, this week we had an average weight of  10 pounds. The fishing was very irregular, some good sesions followed by some very poor ones. But despite the difficult conditions, we managed to catch three 24 pounders, one 26  and one 26,5 pounders!! And 4 of this huge fish were caught in the last session of the week, on Thursday evening, what a way to finish the week guys! Best award for the hard work anglers that fished with us this week. Well done guys!

We fished mostly with skaggit lines with type 8 tip or15 feet of T14 and teeny 300 in the single hand rods, depending on the water temperature, fish mood and the pools. We had a couple of morning with very cold water, 5 degree celsius! And the water was never warmer than 10 degrees. So we followed the rule of cold water conditions: to fish deep and slow. The most successful flies were the tube flies like the collie dog or sunray shadow, leeches and rubber legs.

All  the big fish we caught this week were very fresh, that means that there are still some big fresh fish coimng into the river. We also hooked and lost some really big fish, the huge monsters are waking up and everything can happen the following weeks….

JAN2nd  – JAN9th, 2010

O V E R A L L   C O N D I T I O N S : We were fortunate to arrive when the water already dropped its level. The water was very high and muddy most of December.  The air temperature rounded from 5 to 15 degrees celcius. No rain.

R I V E R   C O N D I T I O N S :  Water level was very good during the whole week, dropping only a few centimeters a day.

F I S H I N G : The season started pretty well. The first day of fishing was right after the highest ties of January were over (full moon). There were lots of fresh and fat fish coming into the river during the high tie. Most of the catches were in pools that had a lot of logs in the water,  resulting in a good quantity of fish being lost. All of the fish were bright, silver and ready to make your drag burnt.

Sinking tips and floating lines were used this week, ranging from 2 to 5 inches per second. Mid sized and small flies were used, such as wonder bug.

More of half of the fish caught this week was after the sun was already down the mountains.

The size of the fish landed ranged from 5 to 22 pounds.

T O T A L  C A T C H E S : Three rods fishing 6 days caught 29 sea trout averaging 11 pounds and 1 of them 22 pounds, which was the biggest of the week.

E X T R A S : Robalo fishing was very successful during this week. A couple of hundred fish were caught, ranging from 3 to 9 pounds.

As a fishing guide in southern Patagonia, guiding and fishing for sea-trout has become something really interesting and necessary for me, this is an extremely difficult fish to catch, most of the good fishing is in low light conditions and you  never know when  this moody fish is going to take your fly, but when they do! hold on from your rod cause their takes are what  I call AGRESSIVE!

Take a look of the different colors and shapes that they can get depending on the ambient where they come from. Here i picked some pictures of our recent sea-trout caught in several countries in the world.

W E E K 4 – JAN 24th – JAN 30th

W E A T H E R   C O N D I T I O N S : Sunny conditions most of the week. We had temperatures between 10 and 16 degrees. Some days with very strong wind but we managed to fish.

R I V E R   C O N D I T I O N S: Water level was normal again. The river was very clear and had a good amount of flow. We did`t have big changes in level this week. The water temperature was good, from 8º Celsius to 13º Celsius

F I S H I N G:  The fishing got really tough the first two days. We think that the fish was really spooky and not active at all after they went back to their holding pools. We did try everything, fishing all kind of depths and flies, from early morning to late night. At one point some of the guides had doubts that the fish that we saw and caught the week before was still in the river. After some days very tough fishing we started to see and catch fish again. I have to say that Sea trout fishing in this river  is very unpredictable and strange without any pattern to hold on to.
Again we started to catch fish mostly at the end of the session with almost no sun light but still the numbers were pretty bad.
Multi tip lines, from floating to type 6 where used, as I said we tried everything.
Fish from 4 to 21 pounds were landed.
ONE`S AGAIN A STEELHEAD WAS CAUGHT IN IRIGOYEN RIVER.

T O T A L   C A T C H E S : SIX rods fishing 6 days caught 35 sea trouts averaging 10,4 pounds and ONE of them over 20 pounds. The biggest of the week was an 21 pounder.

W E E K JAN 10 th – JAN17 th, 2009

W E A T H E R C O N D I T I O N : Most of the days had rain followed by overcast weather. The air temperature rounded from 5 to 15 degrees celcius.

R I V E R C O N D I T I O N S : The water level was normal and was getting lower and clear until we had two full days of continius rain. The water level rose about 40cm in a very short time.

The week ended with a very big and coloured river.

F I S H I N G : Fish kept running up the river and stopping in the main big pools. Most of the catches were in pools that had a lot of logs into the water making the catches more difficult, resulting in a good quantity of fish being lost. After the water rose we didn`t catch any fish until we went to Malenguena river that finally had enough water for the fish to run up. All of the fish were bright and silver. Sinking tips were used this week, ranging from 2 to 5 inches per second. Mid sized and small flies were used at the beggining and big and bright flies when the river rose.

Most of the fish were caught during daylight and we did not see a lot of movement in the water at the end of the day.

The size of the fish landed ranged from 5 to 19 pounds.

T O T A L C A T C H E S : Three rods fishing six days caught 24 sea trout averaging 8 pounds and four of them over 16 pounds, which were the biggest of the week.
